Psalm 13: Consider And Answer Me

Image
Psalm 13: Consider And Answer Me To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. What do you think? David felt as if God had forgotten him - as if God had mislaid him, or was oblivious of him. In this emotional song, David says that he feels this way because of enemies and foes (hateful people; crushing, crowding things). What circumstances have recently made you feel this way? David begs God to "consider" (to look

Psalm 5: Give ear to my words, O Lord

Image
Psalm 5: Give ear to my words, O Lord To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue. Make them bear their guilt, O

Psalm 4: God Of My Righteousness

Image
Psalm 4 God Of My Righteousness To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.   Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord. There are many who say, "Who will show us some good?" Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!" You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalms 4:1-8 (ESV) WHAT DO YOU THINK? How does prayer depend upon grace? Da

1 Timothy 3: Hospitable and Able to Teach

Image
Hospitable and Able to Teach 1 Timothy 3:2 What has gone before... Paul's description of a person suitable for consideration as overseer of a church began with one who was above reproach: faithful in marriage, sober-minded, self-controlled and respectable. Moving on... "An overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable..." 1 Timothy 3:2 (ESV) HOSPITABLE: philoxenos "fil-OX-en-os" (fond of guests); from philos (dear, as a friend; fond or friendly, referring to an associate or neighbor) and xenos (foreign, as alien or novel; a guest or entertainer) "Hospitable" seems to provide at the same time the means and the motive for spending time with new acquaintances: treat them as friends and regard their quirks as entertaining. The word, "hospitable" is found three times in the Bible: used twice by Paul in similar directions to Timothy and Titus concerning overseers.

Unholy Prayer

Image
Unholy Prayer What has gone before... Paul asserts his appointment by God, emphasizing that God did the placing, realizing that his life would be lain down for sacrificial service . He affirmed his honesty and sincerity, knowing that his reputation for violence and rigid religion still dogged his steps. Although still very much Jewish in pracice, Paul felt himself more and more drawn to ministry to the Gentiles, knowing that God had chosen for His own, people from every race, every ethnicity, every language. Moving on... Paul now returns to the theme with which he began this chapter: "I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling." 1 Timothy 2:8 (ESV) What led Paul to emphasize prayer without anger or quarreling? Paul's initial motivation for prayer was that "we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." (1 Timothy 2:2) Immediately following this exhortation Pa

Politics and Prayer

Image
Politics and Prayer Paul has warned Timothy to expect opposition from two specific leaders in the church of Ephesus: Hymenaeus and Alexander. Far beyond giving Timothy a simple heads-up, Paul handed the two men "over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme." (1 Timothy 1:7) Paul's spiritual battle with these two men was not vindictive, at least not on Paul's part. Paul remembered that he was, not long ago, a worse sinner than even Hymenaeus and Alexander. He called himself a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent of Christ . For his transformation from sinner to saint, Paul credited God alone. "I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen." 1 Timothy 1:16-17 (ESV) Closely following Paul's giving over,

Devoted to Prayer and Preaching

Image
Devoted to Prayer and Preaching "But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." Acts 6:4 (ESV) DEVOTE: proskartereo (to be earnest towards, to persevere, be constantly diligent, to attend, to adhere closely to); from pros (forward to, toward) and kartereo (to be strong, steadfast or patient); from kratos (vigor) The English word "devote" comes from a Latin word meaning "from a vow", to be dedicated by a solemn act. The English word tends to be used to describe emotions of compassion and selfless love for others. It has a quality of softness , with tones of tenderness. "The woman devoted herself to the unending care of her ailing husband." The Greek word used by Paul is as similar to that our our English word, devote, as an M1 Abrams battle tank is similar to an XTS Cadillac luxury vehicle. The apostles declared that they would make prayer and preaching their M1 battle tank: unstoppably strong and steadfast.

Scornful or Humble?

Image
Scornful or Humble? "Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor." Proverbs 3:34 (ESV) SCORNERS: lis (to make mouths at, to scoff, to interpret or intercede) HUMBLE: anav (depressed in mind or circumstances, saintly); from ana (to depress) FAVOR: hen (graciousness, kindness, favor, beauty); from hanan (to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior, to favor, bestow, implore) The word for scorn is to make mouths at , to exaggerate the sound or appearance of someone for the purpose of insult or shame. Scorners of God exaggerate or twist His Words, turning His truth into a joke or example of shame , bringing others to laughter and preventing them from taking God seriously. God allows the scorner to mock...more, God returns the scornful behavior back towards the mocker, describing truths even more incredible and incomprehensible to the scornful mind. To be humble is to be depressed, to consider oneself to be without strength, influence

A Prayer of God's Righteousness

A Prayer of God's Righteousness This is so good! I have to re-post it here so I can return to it often. "In Christ, there is nothing I could do that would make you love me more, and nothing I have done that makes you love me less. Your presence and approval are all I need today for everlasting joy. As you have been to me, so I will be to others. "As I pray, I’ll measure your compassion by the cross and your power by the resurrection." "Things like radical generosity and audacious faith are not produced when we focus on them, but when we focus on the gospel. Focusing on what we ought to do for God creates only frustration and exhaustion; focusing on what Jesus has done for us produces abundant fruit. Resting in what Jesus has done for us releases the revolutionary power of the gospel." Source: J.D. Greear , http://theresurgence.com/authors/jd-greear

Continuing in Prayer, Part 1: Watchful Thankfulness

Image
Continuing in Prayer, Part 1: Watchful Thankfulness Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2 (ESV) What do you think? Does the Bible teach that Christians should pray a certain amount of time each day, or a specific time of the day? Does "continue steadfastly" mean lots of prayer, or does it mean heartfelt prayer? Paul urges the Christians in Colossae to pray, but not simply pray. He says they should continue steadfastly in prayer . What did he mean? Continue steadfastly: proskartereo ( to persevere, be constantly diligent, adhere closely to ), from "forward to" and "be strong". Being watchful: gregoreo ( to keep awake, to watch ), related to ageiro (to gather), as in collecting one's faculties. With thanksgiving: eucharistia ( gratitude, grateful language ), from "good" and "favor". Paul defines steadfast prayer as being watchful and thankful in prayer . He connects t

A System of Prayer: Problem?

Image
A System of Prayer: Problem? Is prayer a duty, or is it a privilege? Is joy essential to salvation, or an optional by-product? I had been thinking about the tension a Christian sometimes feels between duty and joy. The next day an unexpected encouragement came from a post by a friend, Paul LeBoutillier (www.ccontario.com). Paul graciously allowed me to repost it. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalms 42:1-2, NIV) The slave to the "system of prayer" soon finds that his prayers lose their freedom and become less spontaneous, less effective. He finds himself concerned over matters that should give him no concern whatever—how much time he spent in prayer yesterday, whether he did or did not cover his prayer list for the day, whether he gets up as early as he used to do or stays up in prayer as late at night. Inevitably the calendar crowds out the Sp
